How to Wear Sequins (With Everything!)

I know you know this. But I love shiny things. I am a total magpie. And a couple of years ago after I decided I was going to wear whatever I liked, I started buying shiny things - a LOT. So, sequin is pretty much my middle name. There are some fabulous sequinned pieces out there and as you can see, I have been indulging!

Here are some fun ways to wear sequins - even in the day time!

In an Accessory

If you're a little bit wary of looking like a disco ball, ease into it with an accessory, like this gorgeous sequinned scarf by Bohemian Traders, on sale for $30! It's a great way to break up black or add texture to your outfit.

I'm wearing:
Bohemian Traders Scarf, $30.30*, Trenery skirt and Chocolat jacket (both past seasons), Lindsay Heel by Country Road, 81.75 on sale

With More Texture

You'd think that with such a detailed skirt, it would look best with a super plain top, but not true! Adding another texture somehow makes the whole outfit come together. Experiment with different textures, shiny, matte, sequinned, wooly, you might just find a combo you love!

I'm wearing: City Chic top (Past season) that I bought from Everlasting who do amazing second hand sales in Auckland. My skirt is from Bohemian Traders, $83.05 Sizes XS-4XL*, but not many left now! I am wearing the XL, but I think I should have bought the XXL for a little more room in the tummy. Shoes same as above.

Tone on Tone

So you are wearing a white sequinned dress, what should you add? More white! Use the texture trick (here I'm mixing with leather) and you can easily get away with matching your sequins with more of the same colour without looking like a colour from the crayon box.

I'm wearing: Trelise Cooper dress and jacket which I bought at the sale this year.  See what else I bought at the sale and for how much, here! Shoes same as above.

With Denim

Oh denim how I love thee! Denim truly goes with everything and it is the perfect fabric to make your sequins feel a little more casual.

I'm wearing: Cait&Co Denim jacket, Sizes 8-16, $79.00. This is hands down the best denim jacket I have ever tried on. Cait & Co is curated by the wonderful Caitlin Taylor, stylist at Chasing Cait - Style Coach and she sure knows how to pick pieces that you can wear with everything! This denim jacket fits me like a dream (I'm in the 16) and is really soft and comfy. My dress is again by Bohemian Traders, on sale for $51.19, sizes XS-4XL*. Such an adorable swing dress. I bought the XXL, but could have fit the XL, I'm happy to wear it looser though. Here is the thing about sequins, they are sharp. And when you wear them in a dress, under your arms, your inner arms are going to get scratched. Which is why I styled this one with a jacket. Often designers put knit panels under the arms to stop this from happening which is a great move, but a few scratches would not stop me wearing this dress, I love it!

So what do you think, are you a sequin convert? What sequinned pieces do you own and love?
