5 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Stylist

I had a fabulous shopping trip with a lovely client today, but when she first got in touch she told me she was concerned how it would go. She had worked with 2 other stylists and not yet gotten the result she hoped for. I asked her why she thought that was, and she said she ended up with a whole bunch of clothes that were lovely, but not comfortable or practical for her lifestyle. Now this got me thinking, if you are looking for a stylist, how do you know what to look for?

I ask my clients a series of questions before we meet to make sure I really understand what they need, because it has to be the right fit for both of us. Of course I want to make sure that we will get on, but most importantly I want to be positive I can help you. And if I can’t, I will pass you on to someone that can. A lovely lady contacted me recently who was having trouble finding petite size clothing (sizes 4 -6) that she really loved, and I passed her on to another stylist who I know specialises in this area. Sure I gave her some names of stores I knew of off the top of my head, but petite is not something I know much about.

You need a stylist who gets you, gets where you’re at, and has an approach that works for YOU.

Here are a few questions you can ask a stylist before deciding to let them into your life (and your wardrobe!)

 1.     What do you actually do?

Okay it sounds basic, but stylist have very different methods. Some like to identify body shapes and do your colours and some approach it in other ways. My motto is ‘Wear your Personality’ so my number one focus is to get to know who you are, what you want your clothes to say about you and how you want to feel in them. I don’t do your colours because I don’t feel like you need more ‘rules’. If you’re already struggling with what to buy and I tell you that one specific shade of green suits you and it has to have a V neck (and SURPRISE that green is not on trend this year!) you are just going to end up confused and probably naked. And get arrested. And then where will we be?

While it’s important to figure out what YOU like the look of on your body, and give you some styling tips and tricks, I also don’t give you body shape rules. I will never compare your body to a fruit or a vegetable or tell you what you CAN’T wear, because it’s rubbish.

2. What is your Philosophy?

I want you to get up in the morning, get dressed, wear that personality and show up for your life! I believe you can be gorgeous, fashionable and yourself all at the same time. I’m here to help you get a wardrobe of things that make you excited for the day ahead and to make fashion fun again.

3.     Where will you take me shopping?

This is a great question, and you might have to give you stylist a few clues here, because you don’t want to end up in Prada on a Kmart budget or vice versa!

Also if you are plus sized/petite/have long feet etc you need to make sure your stylist knows of stores that will suit you so you have a productive shopping trip.

4.     What’s your personal style?

This is just about being nosey really, I love hearing fashionable women talk about their wardrobes! If hearing your stylist chat about their shoes makes you smile, chances are you’re on the right track. It doesn’t matter if their personal style varies from yours, as long as they know how to dress YOUR personality.

 5.     Do I like you?

Do not actually ask this! But certainly think it. Okay I am going to give you money, then I am going to spend a couple of hours with you at my house, and probably a few more shopping. Do I want to hang out with you for that long? Are you fun and relatable? Are you going to make me feel positive about myself? If yes, then I’d say you have yourself a stylist!

If you’ve been hanging out here for awhile and am thinking that maybe I am the stylist for you, feel free to get in touch for a chat. Likewise if you think I am NOT the stylist for you, fire me a message and ask me to suggest another one. There are some FAB stylists in my network and I am more than happy to do that. As long as you are feeling like a happy glitter bomb in the mornings then I am happy!

Happy styling,
